Sikandar Elahi Rana

1935

Wazirbad

Born on December 21, 1935 in Wazirabad within the Punjab Province of British India, now in Pakistan. Belongs to an influential Rajput family from Sialkot which traced its roots back to Sirohi State (father Mozaffar Elahi was a tax officer - Tehsildar, and mother was Nur Fatima ).

1949

Early Education

Got his early education in Lady Anderson School, Sialkot; did his Matriculation from Govt High School Sargodha, and joined F. C. College, Lahore in 1949. In late 1950 he was selected in Pakistan Air Force but had to withdraw on the insistence of his parents.

1959

Graduation

Joined Nishter Medical College Multan in 1953. After graduation and a house job in ENT and Eye (six months each), he was appointed as a medical officer in Samli T.B. Sanatorium, Murree.

1960

Comissioned

In February 1960, he was commissioned in Army Medical Corps and served on a different field, administrative and training appointments.

1962

Married

Got married on March 18, 1962 with Rifaquat Bano.

1962

Dir-Bajaur

As a medical office, he was deployed for the suppression of "tribal" rebellions in the North-West Frontier Province (present-day Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), where he got Tamgha-i-Difa, a defense Medal 'Dir-Bajaur'.

OWJTC-2

While serving as a Medical Officer in Infantry Battalion, Quetta. He took 'Officers Weapon and Junior Tactical Course' at Infantry School Quetta, and secured the highest result AX and Best Pistol Shot.

1963

Father

Birth of his first child Sabahat on January 12, 1963.

1964

Maroon Berets

Captain Sadiq and Captain Farooq, proposed his name for Special Services Group and brought him the joining letter from GHQ to join SSG.

1965

Air Borne-8

Undergone air borne training and served as a Medical Officer during 1965 Indo-Pak war with Special Services Group Headquarters where he got Tamgha-i-Jang (Medal of War) and Sitara-i-Harb (War Star).

1968-69

DADMS

Took Hospital Duties and Senior Officers Administration Courses and served as Deputy Assistant Director Medical Services, Corps HQ in Multan and ADC to Lt Gen Attiqur Rahman, commander IV Corps headquartered at Multan (later moved to Lahore).

1970-71

Decade

Completed first decade of military service as a 2IC (Second in command), Field Ambulance Mangla where he received 10 years Service Medal.

Commanded a field medical unit in the 1971 war and received Sitara-i-Harb (War star) and Tamgha-i-Jang (Medal of War).

1972-74

Secondment

Seconded to Saudi Armed Forces as a medical officer where he was actively involved in the 1973 Arab-Israel war.

1974-76

Field Ambulance

Received Tamgha-i-Sad Saala Jashn-i-willadat-i-Quaid-i-Azam (100th Birth Anniversary of Muhammad Ali Jinnah), serving as Officer in Command, Field Ambulance Rawalpindi.

1977

AM College

He was one of the first few officers posted to plan and start Army Medical College. In March 1977, the first batch of medical cadets was inducted and he started teaching the subject of Anatomy.

1979

M. Phil

Completed his MPhil (Anatomy) from JPMC Karachi, Jinnah Sindh University, and came back to Army Medical College as Associate Professor. Received Hijri Tamgha (Medal of Islamic Calendar Century).

1980-87

AFM College

He received service medal completing his 20 years of service. Got appointed as a Director Experimental Research and Instructor class I (Anatomy) at Armed Forces Post Graduate Medical Institute (AFM College) where he designed a Master’s Course in Advance Medical Planning and Administration (M.Sc. Medical Admin) for senior army medical officers and and directed the program 8 years.

1987

AMC

In 1987 he came back to Army Medical College as Professor and Head of the Anatomy Department. He was appointed as advisor in Basic Medical Sciences and Head of Basic Sciences Div in Army Medical College. He received Democracy Medal.

1990-91

PhD

He received Service Medal on completing 30 years. Admitted Fellow College of Physicians and Surgeons (FCPS) of Pakistan and completed his Ph.D. from Berlin University in 1991.

1992-97

Hilal Imtiaz

He was awarded Hila-e-Imtiaz (Military) in 1995 and retired in November 1996 with a Golden Jublee Medal.

1997

IIMC

After recovering from a major operative treatment (removal of right kidney). He joined Islamic International Medical College as Professor and Head of Anatomy Department in February 1997.

1999-2001

FFMC

Principal, Fauji Foundation Medical College (now FUMC), Rawalpindi
